Vinyl Heaven, in Frome

Vinyl Heaven, an Actual Record Shop(!!), in Frome

Well, this weekend marked a large break from the norm; I set foot in an actual record shop. The BBC have long been reporting the death of the record shop, so it came to great suprise to learn that there was one a mear 45 minute drive from where I live.

The first surprise was that, in fact, it is not one shop, but two! The first is rammed full of CDs, on the one floor. The second is nothing short of a vinyl goldmine, spread across three floors.

All the vinyl appears to be in very good condition and the staff are both friendly and knowlegable. Alas, their selection of drum & bass is not vast but, to be fair I found 1 or 2 12″s that I wanted, and picked up some pretty obscure prog rock & soundtrack LPs whilst I was there; There really is a vast amount of rock & pop, and also a great selection of really retro soundtracks; I picked up a copy of the soundtrack to cult 70’s horror film Don’t Look Now, which is great!

In an era where the internet itself has become practically the biggest record shop of all, it’s great to see that record shops do actually still exist; You can’t really beat the feeling of flicking through a few thousand LPs on a saturday afternoon; scrolling through a webpage is just not the same at all!

Unreleased Alex Reece Material Surfaces

Alex Reece was/is a drum & bass producer from the UK who was involved in the scene (pretty much) from the beginning, releasing on a variety of labels, starting with Basement, before releasing a number of seminal singles for Goldie’s Metalheadz label, including the highly regarded “Pulp Fiction”; He also had music released on R&S, Moving Shadow, Precious Materials, and remixed a number of high profile artists including UFO, Nenah Cherry, and Tricky. Around this time, he signed a big deal with Island Records and released the album “So Far”, which spawned the hit singles “Feel The Sunshine” and “Candles”.

I always found his music pretty exceptional simply because he didn’t sound like anyone else at all; His melodies were always quite unusual; some people describe it as similar to jazz, but I don’t necessarily agree with that; there’s clearly a wide range of influences in his sound; it’s definately more influenced by early techno pioneers like Carl Craig and Juan Atkins, I think…..

Anyway, of late, he seems to have all but dissapeared from the scene, which is really sad, I think. So I was both delighted and frustrated to discover that there was a second album slated for Reece through Island records, which sadly was shelved.. However, in preparation for the release, a single, “Vicious Circle”, was released; Also, a pre-release CD album sampler, containing six tracks:

1. Vicious Circle (Edit)
2. Vicious Circle
3. Vicious Circle (underdog Remix)
4. Vicious Circle (Freq Nasty Remix)
5. Will You Give Me What I Need?
6. Sound Clash
Source: discogs

Luckily for us, someone who owns the CD has been kind enough to upload two of the tracks to youtube, and results don’t dissapoint.

“Will You Give Me What I Need?”, is a lush, emotional, synth-rich intelligent piece of music that really draws you in with it’s hypnotising melody and great vocal hook:

“Sound Clash” is a pretty daring, typical Alex Reece off-the-wall style roller with more lush synth melodies, similar perhaps to his singles released on his somewhat short-lived Al’s Records imprint; very nice too:

According to the guy who uploaded the videos, the 2nd album’s tracklisting looked like this:

1. Vicious Circles
2. Phantastik Voyage
3. Angels
4. Wheel
5. Will You Give Me What I Need
6. A Different World You Understand
7. Rollin 99
8. A Woman in Da Woman
9. Falling
10. Star
11. Tell Me
12. In Dis World

It can only be assumed that, at this point, the album isn’t likely to surface, which is a great shame; However, it’s great to see these tracks appear.

Sleepy Town Manufacture are amazing…

Sleepy Town Manufacture are one of the first participants of the astonishing invasion of russian electronica into the western world. The band was founded in 1999 by Roman Komarov, Anton Lukoyanychev and Alexander Ananyev. Alexander also produces a unspeakably warm ambient under the name Beautumn.

I stumbled across Sleepy Town Manufacture via the excellent Last.FM site, and felt obliged to recommend them on this blog; They really are exceptionally talented musicians; the music just oozes quality, the melodies and moods in the music come across really well and I urge you all to check them out further via the links at the bottom of this article.

Here’s a little selection of their music…..

“Komnata” – From the album “Inspired By You”

“Latatoo” from the “Latatoo EP”

“Don’t You Miss Me” from the “Miss EP”

There’s loads of great music out there – How To Find It

lastfm_logo-svg-618It’s very easy to find something you like and stick to it. There’s plenty of people I know who do this, and that’s great. For me though, I feel like I’ve done that a lot in the past, and in doing so, overlooked tons of stuff that’s probably even better. It’s like the whole idea of having a favourite band, or a favourite song: at that point, you’re tying yourself to the concept that no artist or song will ever come along that’ll beat it.  As soon as you think that way, you’re gonna miss out, so don’t do it.

If you’re stuck in a rut, the number one tip I would recommend is to set up an account with the awesome last.fm website. Find an artist you like, and press the radio button, and a load of related music that you’ve possibly not heard before will play. As you choose to love or ban each track, it fine tunes it’s recommendations accordingly.

Before using this tool, I just thought the results would be poor; my train of thought being that, even if I like artist X yet hate artist Y, if someone else likes artist X and artist Y, it will recommend artist Y anyway; but I haven’t found that to be the case; it’s clearly a lot more clever than that. If you’re into Logistics, it’s not going to suggest bands like Razorlight, and vice-versa.

I can’t recommend it highly enough. Try it for yourself.

Download this album now, for free, via Last.fm

Well, after a good ten years of writing music under my own name, I’ve decided to make a fresh start, under a new,  as yet undisclosed alias.

As a celebration of turning the page as it were, I have uploaded the first (and last) Robert Graff album, “In The Back Of Your Mind”, to Bandcamp, where it can be played or downloaded, in full, for free!

Mr Projectile is coming back…

Mr Projectile aka Matt Arnold is a producer from the US who produces fairly experimental yet musically rich electronic music. His back catalogue is unbelievably hard to get hold of, therefore I thought that it would be worth mentioning that he’s confirmed, through his Semisexual Records website, the following:

Feb 10th: A new mr. projectile album is about to be released as well as a supporting tour of the U.S.  More info to come.

Quite what form the new album will take is difficult to say but I would suggest it’s worth keeping an eye out for the material in physical form because it tends to be released in scarse quantities, and has proven to be very hard to source after-the-event.

It would seem that some of his songs are available to listen to through the superb Last.fm website, so here’s a little selection of highlights from the Mr Projectile back catalogue, to whet your appetite, as it were:

Mr Projectile – Flying Sounds – listen – From the album “The Last Summer” – can’t find a link sorry
Mr Projectile – You Need – listen – From the album “Sinking” – purchase from Juno Download
Mr Projectile – Bypass – listen – From the album “Pug Times” – purchase from toytronik

Instra:Mental announce new label: Nonplus+

nonplus

Instra:Mental aka Kid Drama & Al Bleek have announced that they are forming their own imprint, entitled Nonplus+. This is the official statement from Kid Drama, announced today:

Just some info on our forthcoming label “NonPlus+ Records”
The label will be an outlet for our work and also other like minded artists. Nonplus will be home to a wide range of electronic music, covering the styles of Minimal dNb, electro, techno, dubstep and general electronica.
We already have the first 3 releases planned and have some great artists working on the label and some exciting collabs lined up.

The label’s debut release, scheduled for mid-April, is the already massive “Wonder Where”, a brooding, deep, emotional rollercoaster-of-a-tune by the mighty D-Bridge. On the flip is “No Future” by Instra:Mental:  never ones to repeat themselves so far it would seem, this is a scary, claustrophobic, intricately-programmed masterpiece, as featured on the recent Commix: Fabric Live CD.
