Mixtape – On The Remix

Back in the nineties, there was a brief period where drum & bass was seen to be pretty cool. We all know those days are long gone, but, during this period, a lot of producers were commissioned to provide remixes for a wide variety of major labels. This mix is a little taster of some my favourite remixes from that period.

Mixtape – Deep Blue – A Brief History – 1994-2006

Deep Blue is one of the original drum & bass producers. Originally one half of 2 Bad Mice, the Deep Blue project emerged in 1994 with the seminal Helicopter Tune. A career that began at the ground-breaking Moving Shadow, Deep Blue went on to release singles for Partisan, Offshore, Scale & 31 Records.

I’ve always really loved Deep Blue’s singles and have painstakingly tracked down each and every release, on vinyl. Deep Blue’s individual and highly-original sound is unmistakable, and his influence on modern drum & bass, especially artists such as Instra:Mental, is undeniable, which is why making a mix like this, at this point in time, seemed more relevant than ever.

Commix Recall To Mind Tracklisting Confirmed

Commix - Call To Mind (Metalheadz)

Many moons ago, before man discovered fire, and before the dinosaurs were wiped out…..erm, ok so probably not that long ago, but I’d say at least 2-3 years ago, some remixes of various tracks from the superb Commix album, Call To Mind, began to emerge.

The first remixes to appear were the D-Bridge remix of Belleview and the Instra:Mental remix of Japanese Electronics. However, Metalheadz have been tight-lipped about the project ever since. All kinds of names have been floating around on the internet, but nothing concrete was ever confirmed…

That was, until late last month, when Chris from Metalheadz finally announced the formats & track-listings for the long-awaited project, which is to be called Recall To Mind. Although the date still can’t be confirmed for sure (when are release dates ever accurate?), it’s been suggested that the project will hit the shops in October 2010.

As for formats, it’s coming out over 1 x 1-sided 12″ vinyl, 2 x double-pack 12″ vinyl, 1 x Limited 10″ vinyl, and a CD Album. Commix have been reported as saying on occasion that it’s a strictly techno/downtempo affair, but that’s not strictly true, as we already know from the D-Bridge & Instra:Mental remixes;  however, it’s probably fair to say at this point that the majority of the remixes aren’t from dnb producers. How this will fair with the drum & bass community, remains to be seen.

Anyway, this is how the project has panned out:

Commix – Recall To Mind

LP 12” Sampler
A: Be True (Burial Remix)

2 x 12” EP Part 1
A Belleview(dBridge Belle-Reviewed Remix)
B Change (A Made Up Sound Remix)
C How You Gonna Feel (Pangea Remix)
D Japanese Electronics (Instra:Mental Moog Remix)

2 x 12” EP Part 2
A Emily’s Smile (Sigha She’s Still Smiling Remix)
B Satellite Type 2 (Marcel Dettman Remix 1)
C Strictly (Kasem Mosse “Needs To Feel Edit” Remix)
D Spectacle (Two Armadillos Remix Rhythm of Life)

Limited 10” Single
A Satellite Type 2 (Marcel Dettman Remix 2)
AA How You Gonna Feel (Pedestrian Remix)

CD
1. Japanese Electronics – (Instra:mental Moog Remix)
2. How you Gonna Feel – (Pangaea Remix)
3. Change – (A Made Up Sound Remix)
4. Belleview – (dBridge Belle-Reviewed Remix)
5. Be True – (Burial Remix)
6. Strictly – (Kassem Mosse “Needs To Feel Edit” Remix)
7. Spectacle – (Two Armadillos Rhythm Of Life Remix)
8. Emilys Smile – (Sigha She’s Still Smiling Remix)
9. Satellite Type 2 – (Marcel Dettmann Remix 1)
10. Satellite Song – (Underground Resistance Remix)

Photek Productions on YouTube

Photek Productions was the label that emerged shortly after Photek’s final project with Virgin / Science, the sublime techno album, Solaris. Launched in 2000, it has, to date released 13 singles & 1 EP, from the likes of Photek himself, his alias Special Forces, Digital, Teebee, Fabio, and Peshay. The last single, which was the excellent Teebee remix of Ni Ten Ichi Ryu, was released in 2006.

As an obsessive Photek fan, I am slightly concerned that I’m missing five of those fourteen releases. Thankfully, whilst I hunt these down, I can at least check them out via the ever-brilliant YouTube.

I have compiled a youtube playlist that contains each & every track, except for The End (Remix) and Bounce. Every other track is there, in full.

Can You Identify These Old Detroit House / Techno Tracks?

Back around 1996/1997, I used to listen to a local pirate radio station. Two DJs known as Kane & Dave used to play a house & techno show every week. One particular week, I taped bits of it because it was really good. Anyway, below are clips of two particular tracks that after all these years, I have still not been able to identify. All I can tell you is that the tracks must have been released before 1997.

Please have a listen, and if you have any idea what they might be, please let me know by replying to this post, or via email.

I am hopeful that one day, I will own these tracks!

There were originally three tracks that I was looking to identify, but someone was able to identify the third; it turned out to be “Restless Dub” by Schatrax Discogs Link. Maybe that gives you some idea as to the era we’re talking about.

Update 4th June 2010 23:00
My massive forum-raiding efforts have not been in vane!  After fourteen years of searching, the second track  in this post has been ID’d as being “On The Sly” by Vango Noir. There’s no clips on youtube (other than my video). Here’s the discogs link

Session 022 June 2010

Apologies for the delay on this episode of the podcast – however, here it is. I’ve made a concious decision this month not to repeat stuff by artists I’ve already covered – this could have easily have been another mix full of Kira Neris / Floating Points etc but wanted to try and cover some new ground this month, where possible. Hope you enjoy it.

New James Devane Material : En

En: Maxwell August Croy & James Devane

James Devane, who’s album of ambient guitar droning loveliness featured heavily in last year’s podcasts (Link | Link | Link), is working on some new material. It’s a collaboration with another musician from San Fransisco named Maxwell August Croy, and will be released on a label called Root Strata.

En is a relatively new duo comprised of San Francisco musicians Maxwell August Croy (Root Strata) and James Devane (Bremsstrahlung). The pair have been hard at work for some time now crafting their debut album, due out on Root Strata later this year. “Mother of Thousands” offers a peak into the duo’s sound, in which all manner of bowed strings are run through various custom processing systems and filters to yield a surging, resplendent ur-drone that is rife with brilliant detail. Be sure to also check out James’ superb debut solo offering, available for free download via the Bremsstrahlung site linked above.

The first fruits from this project have emerged, and the results are really lovely. Maxwell has very kindly uploaded the track Mother Of Thousands to his Soundcloud site:

Omar S Mix for Red Bull Academy Radio

Omar S

At the moment, I’m a bit obsessed with Omar S, an underground house/techno producer from Detroit. He’s fierecly independant, puts all his own stuff out on his own Detroit-based FXHE label, and last year, produced a mix for the Fabric Live series, containing nothing but his own music – a brave move !

Anyway, I just stumbled across this mix he made for Red Bull Academy back in 2005, originally hosted by fullbozman.com, and it’s really nice. A great selection of obscure, underground house music. The track listing is a bit patchy, but here it is:
